Minty green accent walls.

The house is one step closer to being a home. Yep, we have been in there for almost two years and I'm still not done. Will I ever be? No, prolly not.

A couple weeks ago we painted the trim/floorboards on the main floor of our house (doing the whole thing was too intimidating of a feat). That part was boring compared to what came next. AN ACCENT WALL. I'm so sick of one tone, boring color paint across the house. Plus, I sort of love painting.

This wall runs from the living room into the kitchen. I decided to do the whole thing mint green (actual color is sea anemone by Martha Stewart, mixed by Behr, because it was cheaper).

 The living room wall.

Another view of the living room wall, and how it runs into the kitchen.

This is in the kitchen, on the way out to the garage. You can really see the color popping here against the white and tan.

What else would I have done with all the leftover paint swatches, but frame them and hang it on my wall collage?

This is what our house looks like (well, before we moved in). The kitchen is so dark. Ever since I saw the cabinets with the black appliances for the first time, I have been slightly regretful that we chose those colors while we were building. So dang dreary, so I'm always trying to find ways to brighten it up (i.e. the potholder wall). This accent wall (paired with the new white trim) worked beautifully. It's much brighter in there now.

Chris likes modern, clean walls. One color. Nothing too exciting. But even he was thrilled with the outcome of this wall. I was shocked when these words came out of his mouth: "It might be fun to do a tangerine accent wall somewhere in the house."

YES.

Potholder wall art in the kitchen.

Do you see mister owl hiding in that knit?

The big, bare kitchen wall finally has color. LOTS of it. I'm not sorry. I think it turned out great. Chris likes it too (despite the 22 holes).

Most are crocheted, but some are knit. The knitted ones were made by my Grandma Janis for our wedding. She's so cute--she loves cows and decorates her kitchen in them. When she asked me "what theme is your kitchen," I didn't really know what to say. (I don't do themes. I do eclectic.) So I just blurted out "OWLS" (because I love them) and she whipped us up some rags. Sweet story, huh?

In between jobs I had a week break where my gramma taught me the basics of crocheting. 1)IT HURTS MY HANDS SO MUCH. 2)I can't believe how intricate it is. Mess up one knot and BAAM. You're screwed. 3)I have new, profound respect for all of you crocheters out there.

When I have some more time on my hands, I'll try again to pick it up. I just love the look.

But.

Since I did not want to wait for myself to become pro, I searched the web for colorful potholders. I like the idea that some sweet old lady spent hours making these pretties and now they will be enjoyed for years in our home. These all came from Etsy. In no particular order:

Pot holder wall art.

I have a big, empty wall in my kitchen. I want to fill it with shelves and plates and murals and vinyl...I just don't know how to do it. Arranging it all is stressful. The other problem: my dog's playpen is right beneath that wall and so we don't want anything up with potential to fall and hurt him. My newest musing? Pot holder artwork.

I am hoping to have some time next week to learn to crochet. It'd be fantastic to fill the wall with fun, eclectic pot holders in vibrant yarns!

The kitchen light came.

It came! And it's all installed! Do you like? One thing I didn't think about when I got this: it's hard to clean. Like, really difficult.

Turned off:
My kitchen is something I struggle with. The colors are all so dark--the cabinets are nearly black, the appliances are black and the counter tops are dark grey. What were we thinking when we chose everything so DARK? I'm trying to brighten it with fun things (like this light). We'll get a better curtain (more colorful!) in there sometime soon, as well. One step closer...
